2018 Mazda6 Vs. 2018 Toyota Camry

Although SUVs have become increasing popular, midsize sedans aren’t going anywhere. Delivering comfortable passenger space, secure cargo capacity and a smooth refined ride, this timeless class continues to be the preferred choice for automotive manufacturers to show off cutting-edge technology and driver-focused improvements. For Mazda, the midsize Mazda6 has been a class-leader in making luxury car style affordable. With its expansive, hungry grille, sweeping contours and fashion-forward lighting, the Mazda6 doesn’t play by the rules that govern the non-luxury midsize sedan class in which it competes.

Today, we’re putting the Mazda6 up against a class veteran – the Toyota Camry. With both vehicles undergoing refreshes for 2018, neither has an excuse. Bolstered by a host of standard features, the 2018 Mazda6 seeks to bring a sophisticated and elegant interior and exterior design to the masses. The 2018 Toyota Camry has been overhauled to shake its reputation for being a reliable, but forgettable, entry in an already-staid class. Comparing these two, pay attention to standard features, value and comfort.

2018 Mazda6 Advantages Vs. 2018 Toyota Camry

The 2018 Mazda6 enjoys several compelling advantages over the class veteran and hallmark Toyota Camry. Namely, it’s a car built with the needs of everyday drivers considered. With a spacious interior, large cargo area in the trunk and lower price point, the 2018 Mazda6 is appealing based on the numbers.

Looks, on the other hand, are subjective. We find that the 2018 Toyota Camry is a bold redesign that is polarizing and challenging to the midsize sedan class. That can be a good thing, as the class has become famous for what it’s not – engaging, exciting and something to get fired up over. However, the sharp corners and energetic front end of the Camry’s SE and XSE trims are likely to feel dated in only a few years.

The 2018 Mazda6, on the other hand, brings a level of composure and silent strength to the class. It avoids being either under-designed (like competing models from Nissan, Kia and Hyundai), but also doesn’t feel the need to dramatically reinvent itself, as is the case with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. It’s a beautiful car and one that cuts a timeless silhouette.

Inside, the luxuriously-stretched dashboard is simple and sophisticated, putting every control a driver or passenger will need within their reach and without unnecessary complication. Seating textures and interior surfaces are soft touch and welcoming, raising the standard of expectations for this totem class.

The Camry is a good car, but the 2018 Mazda6 is something completely different – it’s a luxury car with an approachable price tag. Its larger interior volume, cargo space and standard features (Apple CarPlay is not available at any trim level for the 2018 Camry), make it the clear victor between the two models.
