Making the right purchase choice is often not the easiest task, and a big ticket item like your next car purchase will require some careful consideration before signing along the dotted line.
Both the 2024 Mazda CX-30 and the 2024 Hyundai Kona are excellent choices for families looking for style, performance and multitasking capabilities that won't break the bank.
To steer you in the right direction, we look at two very capable compact crossover SUVs, so read on as we share how each of these compact SUVs go about their business.
2024 Mazda CX-30
The 2024 Mazda CX-30 which is very closely related to the Mazda3, inherits plenty of the impressive Mazda3's road manners and upmarket quality cabin finishes. For the 2024 model year, the range has additional new trims on offer, the interior has been upgraded, and additional exterior colors have been added.
Shoppers get to choose from a lineup of eight trims: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select Sport, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 Carbon Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Premium, 2.5 Turbo and range topping Turbo Premium Plus.
2024 Hyundai Kona
The latest 2024 Hyundai Kona is now completely redesigned with some thoroughly fresh and modern design cues.
Buyers will be treated to an updated and classy cabin loaded further with more available infotainment technology, safety equipment and comfort features.
The 2024 Hyundai Kona lineup comprises four trims: SE, SEL, N Line and Limited.
Mazda CX-30 vs. Hyundai Kona Interior
The CX-30 features a cabin that is upscale and well-crafted just like the Mazda3. The driver gets a 7-inch LCD Meter Display, and the infotainment display sprouts from the center of the dashboard with the Command Control rotary dial to operate the system located at hand on the center console.
Owners will enjoy an available eight- or 12-speaker audio system depending on trim level. Available luxury items include heated front seats, leather upholstery, and a power-operated rear liftgate on offer on the different trims.
The CX-30 is fitted with a standard 8.8-inch screen and a 6-speaker audio system with Mazda Harmonic Acoustics while the powerful Turbo models come with a larger 10.3-inch display. The CX-30 offers standard Bluetooth, two front USB inputs, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration and SiriusXM satellite radio are trim dependent.
For 2024, the Hyundai Kona features a sleek center console and transmission selection buttons on a stalk behind the steering wheel to help free up space on the console for the large storage area.
Interior appointments include options such as a heated steering wheel and heated and ventilated seats.
Cargo Space
The CX-30 offers a spacious cabin with an EPA passenger volume of 94.1 cubic feet and 20.2 cubic feet of cargo area with up to 45.2 cubic feet once the 60/40 split fold-down rear seatbacks are in the down position.
The Kona offers up to 25.5 cubic feet of cargo volume with all seats rows upright and by folding down the second-row seat 63.7 cubic feet of boot space is made available.
Owners of the Kona will appreciate the rather clever storing of the cargo cover shelf up against the seats rather than having to remove it from their vehicle.
Mazda CX-30 vs. Hyundai Kona Exterior
The 2024 Mazda CX-30 features an eye-catching sweeping S-curve along the sides to help create a sense of movement intended with Mazda's Kodo design philosophy. The CX-30 has a sleek coupe-like side profile shape and a matte black grille, which is gloss black on top trims.
Standard exterior key features abound, such as:
- Automatic on/off LED headlights and tail lights
- LED daytime running lights
- Alloy wheels
- Variable-intermittent windshield wipers
The 2024 Hyundai Kona's aerodynamic shape shows key exterior features like a wide "horizon lamp" below its hood line and Hyundai's now familiar and distinctive "Z surfacing" side panels.
Contrasting black fender flares are fitted, and at the rear end, styling treatments include a further body-wide horizon lamp located below the rear window glass.
Roof rails and alloy wheels ranging from 17 inches to 19 inches are trim-dependent features.
Performance and Powertrain Differences
The 2024 CX-30 is fitted with two engine options. Standard is a SKYACTIV 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 191 horsepower mated with a SKYACTIV-DRIVE 6-speed electronically controlled sport automatic transmission, and power is sent to all corners with the standard i-ACTIV AWD offering Off-road Traction Assist.
Buyers seeking more oomph will do well to choose one of the Turbo trims with their turbocharged 2.5-liter engine making 250 horsepower with the same drivetrain as the naturally aspirated engine.
The 2024 Kona lineup offers two gasoline four-cylinder engines. A 2.0-liter MPI engine is standard, producing 147 horsepower and torque of 132 pound-feet and a more powerful 190 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque turbocharged 1.6-liter engine.
Base engines are fitted with a new continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), while turbo-engined trims get an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Front-wheel drive is fitted across the range, with all-wheel drive being an extra-cost option.
Fuel Economy and MPG
All Mazda CX-30 trims powered by the base 2.5-liter engine have EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 26 / 33 / 29 mpg city/ highway/ combined, and the turbocharged trims offer EPA fuel economy of 22 / 30 / 25 mpg city/ highway/ combined.
Base 2024 Kona trims fitted with FWD offer 29 City / 34 Highway / 31 Combined mpg, while AWD drops these to 27 City / 29 Highway / 28 Combined mpg.
The price to pay for the added performance of the Turbo changed engine is lower fuel economy ratings of 26 City / 32 Highway / 28 Combined mpg for FWD and 24 City / 29 Highway / 26 Combined mpg for AWD.
Safety and Technology Differences
The 2024 Mazda CX-30 has won a 2024 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK + award and a 2024 NHTSA 5-Star Overall Safety Rating thanks to the impressive suite of safety systems plus impressive standard driver-assistance features that include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning, and automated emergency braking.
All 2024 Hyundai Kona trims are standard with equipment such as anti-lock braking, 4-wheel disc brakes, electronic stability control, and traction control support.
Standard Hyundai SmartSense driver-assist technology offers a comprehensive suite of driver aids, including forward collision warning and braking, blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention warning, and high-beam assist.
