2025 Mazda CX-70 vs 2025 Mazda CX-90

Our article takes a look at the 2025 Mazda CX-70 midsize SUV and its twin, the 2025 Mazda CX-90, both sharing Mazda's latest and most advanced powertrains and platform that offers refinement along with superb on-road manners and performance.
Read on as we take a look at what's different in these two midsize Mazda SUVs.
What's New for 2025?
For starters, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 debuted as recently as February 2024.
The CX-70 is available in five trim levels with two engine options: 3.3 Turbo Preferred, 3.3 Turbo Premium, 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus, 3.3 Turbo S Premium, and range-topping 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus.
For 2025, the upscale Mazda CX-90 is now in its second year, with only some shuffling of the trim levels being seen.
An updated six-strong range of 2025 CX-90 trims is available with two engine power options and comprises the 3.3 Turbo Select, 3.3 Turbo Preferred, 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport, 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport Plus, 3.3 Turbo S Premium, and the top-of-range 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus.
Stylish Exterior Design
Casual onlookers will be hard-pressed to spot the differences between these twins that share exterior dimensions along with the same wheelbase.
Both models are built on Mazda's latest rear-wheel-drive-biased large vehicle platform.
The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is the more aggressive-looking of these twins with its slightly different wide and low-slung front bumper with large simulated grilles that lead to air curtain generators in the corners.
The CX-70 rear bumper also gets a different design, with faux vents on the corners.
The exterior design parts ways, with the CX-70 being treated to an exterior that features more dark finishes vs those of the CX-90.
The CX-70 is endowed with a more adventurous and dynamic exterior look that sees contrasting black accents applied across the exterior, and a lineup of black-finished and machine-cut 21-inch alloy wheels is available in various trims.
The CX-70's dark theme continues with a black surround mesh grille, whereas the 2025 CX-90 has more bright work. Further dark accents are the black finished mirror caps, door handles, and roof rails that accentuate the CX-70s adventure-ready and capable looks.
The CX-70 is available in a choice of five exterior colors.
Mazda's flagship and largest SUV, the CX-90, features a black mesh grille but with a chrome accent trim surround that leads into the shared slim horizontal LED headlight design with auto on/off and high beam control.
Both models feature standard LED daytime running lights, and combination LED tail lights at the rear.
The CX-90 has body-colored heated and powered side mirrors with integrated LED turn signals and black front, side, and rear lower body trim and wheel arches with black wheel arch molding.
The standard is the body-colored rear roof spoiler vs the CX-70’s black one, with rear privacy glass, silver aluminum roof rails, “AWD,” and "Inline 6" fender badges.
The CX-90 is available in up to eight exterior color choices.
Elegant Interiors
The most notable difference between the two SUVs is when entering the cabins. The CX-70 is fitted with two rows of seats vs the CX-90’s three rows of seats.
The CX-70 can accommodate up to five passengers, whereas the CX-90 can be configured to offer a standard second-row bench seat for up to eight passengers or fitted with captain’s chairs for seven-passenger seating. Both models offer the same legroom of 41.7 inches in the first row and 39.4 inches in the second row.
Pretty much everything else is shared in the cabin. The interior design is luxurious and constructed with upscale materials.
A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob along with a tilt & telescopic steering column and paddle shifters is found and owners of both models will appreciate the standard 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat featuring power lumbar support and two-position memory.
Fully digital LCD gauge clusters feature a speedometer, tachometer, and fuel gauge, plus the trip computer offers driving information, an external temperature, and a clock display.
Some of the key interior features across both models are:
- Three-zone automatic climate control with pollen filter
- One-touch down/up power windows
- Speed-sensing auto-locking power door locks
- Courtesy lights in front and rear door
- Frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink®
- Dual illuminated visor vanity mirrors with extension
- Illuminated entry system
Cargo Space
The CX-70 offers 39.6 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 75.3 cubic feet of volume once the second row of seats is folded down.
The CX-90 sacrifices trunk space to accommodate the additional row of seats and has up to 14.9 cubic feet of initial cargo space, growing to 74.2 cubic feet once the second and third-row seats are folded down.
Infotainment
Both models are equipped as standard with a 10.25-inch display or optional 12.3-inch unit featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mazda's multi-function commander control and voice command.
Top trims offer an optional 17-speaker Bose audio system to elevate the audio experience.
Drivetrains
The 2025 CX-70 and CX-90 share the same engines with two power output options.
The e-Skyactiv G powertrain comprises an e-SKYACTIV-G 3.3L Turbo Inline six-cylinder gasoline engine plus a 48-volt M-Hybrid Boost motor powered by a 0.33kwh lithium-ion battery system, giving a total output of 280–340 horsepower and 332–369 lb-ft of torque in non-S and S trim, respectively.
Both models feature as standard an e-SKYACTIV-Drive 8-speed automatic transmission with
manual shift mode, rear-biased, i-ACTIV AWD, and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) with Sport/Off-road/Towing modes and Mazda's Kinematic Posture Control.
