Mazda will release a refreshed version of the Miata in 2022. The current model of the Miata was introduced in 2015, so many people say some upgrades to it are long overdue. However, some sources say this new Mazda Miata may be the last non-electrified version of the popular roadster. Some automobile news sources say eventually the Mazda Miata will be some sort of hybrid. It is said that Mazda will have to replace the chassis first. Those in the know say that is in keeping with Mazda’s stated plan to have their entire lineup electrified by 2030.

Use Of An Internal Combustion Engine On New Miata Not Confirmed

Automotive news sources and the general public have not received confirmation from the automaker that the potential ‘NE’ Miata will have an internal combustion engine. There are even rumors it will have an e-fuel option. Speculation about the future of the popular Mazda Miata is running wild. The company has stopped taking orders for the 2021 version of the Miata and has confirmed that a refreshed version will make its North American debut in 2022. The Mazda Miata celebrated its 30th anniversary a few years ago. It’s among Mazda’s longest running models, so refreshing its look isn’t unusual.

The Miata Has A Dubious Future

Although the Miata isn’t dead yet, it’s current model may now be officially out of production. Plus, there is wild speculation about the current ‘ND’ generation Mazda Miata’s fate. Lovers of the traditional Miata are scoring dealer lots looking for any remaining 2021 models. Mazda has made clear its plans for the electrification of the Miata, however, insiders say it will be 2024 before a new model of the Miata is released. For some, this makes the Miata’s future dubious at best. The current Miata generation is a big hit. Thankfully some ICE version Miatas can still be found and enjoyed.

Mixed Messages

The Mazda website says the current model Miata is not being produced in japan any more. However, Mazda USA says otherwise. That has fueled talk about the Miata getting a big refresh. But Mazda USA told a media outlet no plans have been made to stop producing the current generation Miata. A spokesman for Mazda USA confirmed that within the next few weeks an announcement on updates to the 2022 model Miata will be made. This update may coincide with the announcement about the Japanese model. Aesthetically, the Mazda Miata has not changed in six years, so the announcement could be about any type of changes.

Minor Short-Term Cosmetic Upgrades Or More

Mazda could put a new front face, make minor cosmetic changes, add some go-fast hits or other minor changes. The real changes will be seen on the 2024 Miata. Whether Miata buyers want to buy now or wait for the next-generation Miata with a hybrid electric powertrain, a Skyactiv-X engine, a rotary engine, more torque, or more power, they can get it at Seacoast Mazda.
