In off-road mode, weight is shifted to the front tires for better traction, engaging the all-wheel drive system prevents oversteer and yaw damping stops the tail from sliding around. On steep hills, the idle raises automatically and allows a smoother transition to torque application. The SUV’s ABS system is engaged and holds the brakes so the vehicle won’t roll back. The engine’s naturally strong torque kicks in right off idle and the transmission locks the torque converter. In this launch position, the torque converter provides smoother power delivery so the vehicle can traverse large obstacles easily.
5. Unique Features
Two features make the Mazda CX-50 unique. Its i-Active all-wheel drive system that can predict situations when wheelspin will occur then immediately sends power where it’s needed. And the CX-50’s Mi-Drive or Intelligent Drive Select system lets you choose from Normal, Sport or Off-Road mode to improve vehicle response and quickly accelerate without downshifting.
