If you are looking for a compact SUV, there are a lot of options out there. Two of your options are the 2020 Mazda CX-30 and the 2020 Ford Escape. The Mazda CX-30 is all-new for the 2020 model year, and the Ford Escape has been redesigned for 2020, so let’s check out how these two vehicles compare below.

EXTERIOR

Mazda always provides you with excellent exterior style and the 2020 CX-30 is no different. This all-new vehicle was designed with the “charge and release” philosophy to show energy and motion in this vehicle. The Mazda CX-30 is all-new for the 2020 model year. This vehicle is designed to fit between two other crossovers that Mazda offers you the CX-3 and the CX-5. The CX-30 has a length of 173 inches, a width of 70.7 inches, and a height of 60.6 inches, which is slightly larger than the CX-3 and slightly smaller than the CX-5.

The Ford Escape was redesigned for 2020 to give you a head-turning exterior. This vehicle has features like an available panoramic vista roof as well as signature LED lighting, dual chrome exhaust tips, and more. The 2020 Ford Escape is 181 inches long, 74 inches wide, and 66 inches tall.

PERFORMANCE AND ENGINE OPTIONS

In the 2020 CX-30, you can find a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and it should give you around 180-horsepower. This vehicle also has the possibility of getting two other engine options, but they are not available yet. These two engines are a 1.8-liter diesel engine option, and the all-new Skyactiv-X engine. The Skyactiv-X is an engine that blends features of the diesel and gasoline engines. This engine is referred to as a Spark Controlled Compression Ignition engine, and it is not available on the CX-30 right now, but we think it will be soon.

The 2020 Ford Escape offers you a few different engine options. This vehicle comes standard with a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. This engine gives you 180-horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and it can tow up to 2,000 pounds. Your second engine option is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This 2.0-liter engine gives you 250-horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Those are your two engine options when it comes to the 2020 Escape, but the Escape is also available in a Hybrid model. The Escape Hybrid offers you a 2.5-liter Atikinson-cycle powertrain with an 88 kW electric motor, or a plug-in version of this same hybrid motor.

INTERIOR AND TECHNOLOGY

You can expect an impressive interior from the 2020 Mazda CX-30. This vehicle has a driver-centered cockpit, but it offers plenty of features and materials to make up to five passengers comfortable. The interior of this vehicle feels luxurious with a thoughtful design and features like heated seats, leather surfaces, and more. Also, the 2020 CX-30 offers you 15.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats.

There are also some great technology features to be found in the 2020 CX-30. This vehicle features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and more. You will also get an infotainment system, and an 8.8-inch display screen that is operated by a rotary controller.

On the inside of the Escape, you can find seating for five on standard cloth upholstery. However, you have the option to upgrade for features like heated seats, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and more. This vehicle offers you good passenger space with numbers like 40.7 inches of rear seat legroom. The rear seats in the 2020 Escape are also sliding 60/40 split-fold seats to give you more cargo capacity. When it comes to cargo capacity, the Escape offers you 34.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats in place, and up to 65.4 cubic feet of space with the seats folded.

For technology in the Escape, you can find features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an 8-inch touchscreen, and Wi-Fi capability. However, these features are not standard on the base model, you have to upgrade to get them. There are other options for upgraded technology in the Escape, including a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and USB ports.

SAFETY

On the 2020 CX-30, you can find Mazda’s i-Activsense suite of safety features across all trim levels. These safety features include blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and more. This particular model will add a few additional safety technologies. The first additional feature is front cross traffic alert with rear cross traffic alert to help you avoid blind spots in the front and rear. This vehicle is also bringing you a new Driver Monitoring system that watches the driver’s face for signs of drowsiness or fatigue; this system alerts you if you are not keeping your eyes on the road.

When it comes to safety technology, Ford has made its CoPilot360 driver assistance features standard on all of the 2020 Ford Escape models. These features include automated emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and automatic high beams. However, there are a couple of safety features you that are only available on higher trim level options. These features include adaptive cruise control and parking assist.
