Compact sedans are known for their impressive fuel economy ratings, but often space is sacrificed for fuel efficiency. One current-market compact sedan that breaks this trend, however, is the 2018 Mazda3. The 2018 Mazda3 offers plenty of interior passenger space, making even long-legged passengers feel comfortable in the back seat.

But what other features and specifications offered by the 2018 Mazda3 set it apart from the rest of the quality competitors in the compact sedan class? We're putting the 2018 Mazda3 to the test, comparing it head-to-head with one of its biggest rivals: the 2018 Toyota Corolla. The 2018 Mazda3 comes in three high-quality trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.

The 2018 Toyota Corolla's six trim levels do outnumber the 2018 Mazda3's three trims, but we're big believers that quality is more important than quantity. The 2018 Corolla offers two available engine options, though it's important to note that neither are as powerful as the 2018 Mazda3's base engine. In fact, even the 2018 Corolla's more-expensive engine option produces 15 less horsepower and 24 less pound-feet of torque than the base engine in the 2018 Mazda3's engine lineup. Additionally, the 2018 Corolla is missing standard features such as keyless entry, a panic button, and halogen headlights, all of which come equipped on the 2018 Mazda3.

The 2018 Mazda3 also has two available engine options. The Sport trim comes standard with a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV®-G inline-4 engine that kicks out 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the Touring and Grand Touring trims come equipped with a high-power 2.5-liter SKYACTIV®-G engine, which delivers 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. All trims in the 2018 Mazda3's lineup are generously equipped, with each trim offering high-quality standard features such as Push Button Start, the MAZDA CONNECT™ Infotainment System, a 7-inch full-color touchscreen display, and Smart City Brake Support.
