Why Is Important to Perform 30K, 90K, 120K Service On Your Car?

Mechanics performing important service to Mazda car

If you look in your car manual or check with a car manufacturer, they are going to have lists of suggested services. There will be manufacturer recommended maintenance at points like 30,000, 90,000, and 120,000 miles. You may have the tendency to overlook these recommendations, but it is important to regularly service your car to ensure there won't bigger issues in the future.

When you own a vehicle for a long period of time, instead of trading your vehicle in for newer models, your car will experience wear and tear. A car with 90,000 miles on it has the wear from driving all those miles. There are some inspections and some regular vehicle maintenance that can be done at certain points to check your vehicle or replace parts that may need it.

Below, you can learn a little bit more about the types of service performed at these different checkpoints of your vehicle’s life and why they are important. If you have any questions about this maintenance, you can reach out to us at Seacoast Mazda. Remember, regular vehicle maintenance can help your vehicle stay in better condition for longer. It is often better to get preventative care and maintenance than wait for something larger to go wrong with your vehicle. Learn more below.

30K/90K/120K Service

When it comes to your 30/90/120K service, there are certain things that will likely be looked at. Check out some of these things below.

  • Oil Change – The first big thing to do is an oil change. You are likely very familiar with the importance of an oil change, it keeps your vehicle running as it should and it keeps your engine from overheating. It needs to be done regularly, the exact mileage depends on your oil type and your specific vehicle.
  • Tire Rotation and Inspection – Another part of your service will likely be a tire rotation and overall tire inspection of tires, including adjusting the tire pressure if needed. Tire rotations help to keep your tires wearing more evenly so that you get the most use out of your tires.
  • Filter Inspection/Replacement – This is also a good time to inspect and replace the different filters in your vehicle. Vehicles have cabin filters, air filters, oil filters, and fuel filters. Cleaning or replacing these filters helps your vehicle perform better for longer for you. For example, your air filter prevents dust, particles, and debris from getting to your engine. When you have a clean air filter, you have better car performance and you can even decrease fuel consumption.
  • Check of Brake System – This time is also a good time for an inspection of brakes, including brake lines, hoses, and disc brakes.
  • Suspension Check – You can also get your suspension and steering operation checked at the time of a regular service.
  • Spark Plugs – Depending on your vehicle and the type of spark plugs, you might get 80,000 miles before your spark plugs need to be replaced. It is good to have them checked out at regular intervals, but it won’t likely be until the higher mileage checks that they need to be replaced in your vehicle.
  • Timing Belt – The engine in your vehicle has a timing belt so that it stays in sync and keeps the engine operating smoothly. The timing belt will likely last you around 100,000 miles or so, which means it isn’t something that needs replacing at 30,000, but it is something to be replaced in higher mileage vehicles. Your timing belt is made of rubber, so eventually it will wear down and need to be replaced. If you don’t replace it, you are looking at a more costly repair of your engine.
  • Engine Coolant – This is not something that will happen at 30,000 miles, but at higher mileage services, you will likely need to get your engine coolant replaced. The coolant in your engine can deteriorate after many miles of use and there can be particles built up or the liquid can even become more acidic and cause issues for you. It is not something that needs to be replaced frequently, but it will need to be on occasion.

Above, we took a closer look at some things that occur during 30K/90K/120K service. A few of those items are more around your 120K service for those higher mileage items, but a trusted mechanic will be able to tell you what your vehicle needs. You can also consult your car manual for the specifics from your automaker about recommended service.

Ultimately, it is important to get your vehicle inspected at regular intervals, especially as it gets more mileage on it. Wear and tear can impact your vehicle and sometimes waiting can make things worse and lead to a larger repair.
