One of the biggest differences between the 2023 CX-9 and the 2024 CX-90 is what you can find underneath the hood. Every 2024 CX-90 comes with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, allowing you to get a few miles out of every trip without using any fuel.

The stock engine with the 2024 CX-90 is their e-SkyActiv-G 3.3L Turbo inline 6, which pushes 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. This engine can already outcompete the engine on the 2023 CX-9, but if you want even more power there’s the e-SkyActiv-G 3.3L Turbo inline 6 that pushes 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Cargo Space & Ground Clearance

Not only does the 2024 CX-90 get a refresh underneath the hood, but it’s also a brand-new interior. The cargo space increases to 15.9 cubic feet behind the third-row seats, and if you fold the second and third-row seats you open up an impressive 75.2 cubic feet of storage.

This extra storage space comes in handy in a wide array of situations, but perhaps the most notable is that some options now come with enough seats for eight people instead of topping out of 7 like with the 2023 CX-9.

The CX-90 does sit a bit closer to the ground than the CX-9, dropping down to 8.0” inches of ground clearance. It’s still high enough to tackle most terrain, but it is a full 0.8” shorter than the 2023 CX-9.

Standard Features

With so many standard features already available on the 2023 CX-9 it’s no surprise that the 2024 CX-90 comes with a ton of great features too. All-wheel drive still comes standard, and of course you get modern features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

However, the 10.3” infotainment screen that comes with the CX-9 gets a clear upgrade with the CX-90, growing to 12.3” in every model.

Standard safety features with the 2024 CX-90 include Mazda’s radar cruise control with stop-and-go technology, a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alerts, a lane departure warning system with lane-keeping assistance, and a smart brake support system while driving forward.

Every 2024 CX-90 also comes with a driver attention alert system to help you keep your eyes on the road, and even the lower-end CX-90s come with a 3,500-pound towing capacity, although higher trim levels up this capacity to an even more impressive 5,000 pounds.
