2022 Kia Sorento vs. Mazda CX-9

2022 Mazda CX-9 vs. 2022 Kia Sorento

If you're in the market for a 3-row SUV, you'll want to be sure to compare the 2022 Mazda CX-9 vs. 2022 Kia Sorento to make an informed decision. They’re both great vehicles, which can make it a bit of a challenge to try and figure out which one is right for you.

That’s why we came up with this guide to walk you through everything you need to know about both vehicles. That way you can make an informed decision and get the perfect vehicle for you and your needs.

2022 Mazda CX-9 Performance Specs

The 2022 Mazda CX-9 only has one engine option: the SkyActiv-G 2.5L Turbo inline-four cylinder engine. It produces 227 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 230 lb-ft of torque at just 2,500 rpm.

This makes for an engine with a ton of low-end torque, and it’s a big reason why it can tow up to 3,500 pounds if you equip it with the right towing package. Only having one engine option means it’s easy when you go to make your decision.

You don’t have to worry about picking an engine and figuring out if it has everything you need, it’s a simplified process and with this 2.5L turbo, you get a great engine in every CX-9.

2022 Kia Sorento Performance Specs

While the CX-9 only has one engine option to choose from, the Kia Sorento has two. It’s the same engine, but there’s a naturally aspirated option and a turbocharged one. The 2.5L naturally aspirated inline-four pushes 191 horsepower at 6,100 rpm, and it has 181 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm.

However, if you get the upgraded turbocharged option, those numbers increase to 281 horsepower at 5,800 rpm, and the torque numbers increase to 311 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm.

The engine package you choose also has a huge impact on the maximum towing capacity. The naturally aspirated engine can tow 2,000 pounds, while the turbocharged engine matches the Mazda CX-9 at 3,500 pounds.

2022 Mazda CX-9 Cargo Space

One reason you’re likely going with a 3-row SUV is for the added space. The Mazda CX-9 doesn’t disappoint there. There are 14.4 cubic feet of space without the seating area, but all you need to do to get a ton more is put the seats down.

Once you do that the CX-9 gives you a massive 71.2 cubic feet of space, which is more than enough for just about anything you want to haul around!

2022 Kia Sorento Cargo Space

Compared to the CX-9, the Kia Sorento actually gives you a bit more space, but it really depends on how you’re moving stuff. Because while the maximum cargo space of 75.5 cubic feet is a bit more than the CX-9, if you put people in the seats, you actually lose some space at 12.6 cubic feet of cargo space.

If the seats are up the CX-9 has a slight edge in space, but if they’re down then the Kia Sorento’s available space is just a bit larger.

2022 Mazda CX-9 Safety Features

One thing that helps set Mazda apart from the competition is that they don’t view safety features as an optional upgrade. The CX-9 exemplifies this, and there are tons of standard safety features.

Every CX-9 comes with cruise control with stop and go technology, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, a rearview camera, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warnings, and front brake support systems with pedestrian detection.

Modern vehicles have tons of safety features, and Mazda gives you tons of them. As for non-standard features they also have optional front and rear parking sensors, driver attention alert, smart brake support systems for when you’re in reverse, and a 360-degree monitor. With Mazda, it’s safety first.

2022 Kia Sorento Safety Features

While the Kia Sorento doesn’t have all the same standard safety features as the Mazda CX-9, it’s not like it’s lacking in the safety department.

Standard features still include lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, high beam assist, rear occupant alerts, lane following assist, driver attention warnings, a rearview camera with dynamic parking guidance, and auto emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

It’s a lot of standard features, but there are some optional ones you’ll need to upgrade to get. Those include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, a 360-degree camera, parking distance warnings, and navigation-based smart cruise control.

2022 Mazda CX-9 vs. Kia Sorento Technological Features

When we compare the 2022 Mazda CX-9 vs. Kia Sorento, both cars come packed with tons of technological features, but there are few differences between the two. Both cars come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, that’s where the similarities stop.

The Sorento comes with 6 USB chargers, two in each row, as a standard feature, while you have to upgrade to that for the CX-9. However, the CX-9 includes two of those ports for the front seats, and heated seats are standard while they’re an upgrade for the Sorento.

You also get heated side mirrors and a three-zone automatic climate control system standard with the CX-9, while the dual-zone climate control system on the Sorento is optional.

Looking at Mazda CX-9 vs. Kia Sorento, both come with an option to upgrade to heated second-row seats and a heated steering wheel, and both come with an option to upgrade to a power liftgate. However, only the Sorento has an option for wireless charging for your smartphone, but once again, you’ll need to upgrade to get that.

The “basic” technological features that come in both the CX-9 and the Sorento blow away anything you’d get just a few years ago, but to unlock all the newest technologies on either model you’ll need to go with a higher trim package. But for two vehicles that prioritized standard safety features, we’re perfectly fine with that.
