What’s New in 2022

While some vehicles have significant changes between model years, for the 2022 Mazda CX-9, Mazda stuck with an already impressive formula for the most part. There’s only one extremely notable change that we noticed, and that’s that every 2022 Mazda CX-9 now comes with an all-wheel-drive drivetrain.

That used to be an optional upgrade on higher trim levels, but now you can simply add it to an already impressive list of standard features that Mazda includes with the CX-9.

Performance Specs

While the CX-9 is more of a family hauler, that doesn’t mean it’s lacking performance specs. Every 2022 CX-9 comes with the Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo engine, and that pushes out an impressive 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.

These numbers translate to an impressive 0-60 times of 7.1 seconds, but perhaps even more impressive is the 3,500 pounds of towing capacity that the 2022 CX-9 comes with. Whether you’re looking to bring some toys out on your next family camping trip, or you simply want to feel a responsive vehicle on the freeway, the CX-9 delivers.

Safety Features

Mazda doesn’t believe safety should be optional, and it’s why they offer a slew of standard safety features across their entire fleet of vehicles. The 2022 CX-9 is no different, as it comes with a ton of safety features across every trim level.

Every 2022 CX-9 comes with adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a lane departure warning system, a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams.

It’s a ton of safety features that many other auto manufacturers make you pay extra to get, but Mazda includes standard. Of course they still have even more safety features you can upgrade to with the CX-9.

First, you can upgrade the rearview camera to a surround-view parking camera system that gives you a top-down view of everything around you when you’re parking. You also can get front and rear parking sensors that help you avoid collisions.

Furthermore, while the front collision warning system is standard, there’s a rear collision warning you can add to the vehicle too. Finally, Mazda has road sign recognition technology, adaptive pivoting headlights, and a driver attention alert system in their top safety packages.

While the goal is obviously to avoid collisions, another perk that the CX-9 offers is that if you do get into an accident, it has five-star NHTSA safety ratings across the board. The IIHS also gives it a five star rating, with good ratings in every crashworthiness category.

Trim Levels

It’s hard to say exactly what you’re going to get in your CX-9 without looking at the trim level. So, that’s exactly what we did here by breaking down what each trim level offers so you know exactly what choice is right for you.

Sport

While the Sport might be the base model level CX-9, Mazda doesn’t throw a basic product out there. So, while the Sport might be a base model, it still has tons of features that you’ll love. Not only does it come with the full safety suite that we mentioned earlier, but it has tons of technological features too.

Those features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, a power liftgate, and an eight-way power driver’s seat. These are features that you typically need to upgrade to in other vehicles, so the fact that Mazda includes them standard in every 2022 CX-9 is a pretty big deal.

Even better, new for 2022, every CX-9 comes with an all-wheel-drive drivetrain. When you go with a 2022 Mazda CX-9 Sport, you don’t feel like you’re driving down a base model vehicle.

Touring

With so many outstanding features in the base model CX-9, Mazda really has to put in a ton of extra work to entice you into the next trim level. They don’t miss the mark.

The Touring trim package includes everything in the Sport trim, but you get leather seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power second-row seats, and four USB charging ports for all of your devices.

It’s also the first trim package that allows you to upgrade the audio system, add USB ports to the third row, add a moonroof, or add front and rear parking sensors. They’re not standard, but you can’t upgrade to them at all from the Sport trim level.

Touring Plus

Up next on the list is the Mazda CX-9 Touring Plus trim level. It comes with all the same standard features as the Touring trim level, and of course you can still upgrade to all the additional features from that trim level too.

The main additions to this trim level include ventilated front seats, 20-inch wheels, aluminum roof rails, a black front grille, and the driver’s seat has memory settings paired with each key. That means all you need to do is get in the car with your key and your seat will adjust to the last place you left it.

Carbon Edition

The Carbon Edition is a step above the Touring Plus trim level, but it’s really a unique trim option that doesn’t fit in any sort of hierarchy. It comes with features that you can’t find in any other trim level above or below it, but it does come with all the standard features in the Touring trim package.

It also comes with red leather seats, second row captain seats, interior LED accent lights, an aluminum interior trim, a hands-free liftgate, a heated steering wheel, adaptive LED headlight, rear smart city brake support, and a windshield wiper de-icer.

It’s tons of unique features, and you can’t find some of the appearance options, like the red leather seats, in any other trim level. Moreover, it’s the only trim level that offers the Polymetal Gray paint color for the exterior. So, if that’s the color you want, you need to go with the Carbon Edition trim package.

Grand Touring

The Grand Touring trim package comes with all the features that the Touring and the Carbon Edition trim levels offer, minus the red leather and Polymetal Gray paint from the Carbon Edition. Furthermore, it has heated second row seats, auto-folding side mirrors, 20-inch wheels, and the navigation system comes standard.

It’s also the first trim level that includes a 360-degree surround-view monitor that helps you when parking, and it has traffic sign recognition for when you’re traveling down the road. And while the Grand Touring doesn’t have the red leather upholstery that you can find in the Carbon Edition, you can choose between either black or sand leather upholstery.

Signature

The Signature is Mazda’s top trim package for the 2022 CX-9, and as such it comes with all the bells and whistles. It’s the only trim level with Nappa leather upholstery, and even the quilting is custom. Additionally, you get to upgrade the second-row heated bench seats to second row heated captain seats.

Add in the dual exhaust tips, a front grille with LED accents, and a Santos Rosewood interior trim, and everything about this trim level just screams luxury and style. It’s the best of the best for the CX-9, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint.

The Mazda Warranty

One of the most notable perks of going with a new vehicle is the warranty that they come with. While it’s extremely unlikely that you’ll ever need to use it, having that extra peace of mind is a pretty big deal.

That’s why Mazda provides a comprehensive warranty for 3-years or 36,000-mile on every non-wearable part. Not only that, but they provide a 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. While you’ll likely never need to use the warranty, knowing that you won’t end up with a lemon off the lot makes it a bit easier to sleep at night.
