Mazda recently debuted the 2018 Mazda CX-5, providing a quick glimpse at the features and specifications that will adorn the new compact crossover. We're highly impressed with what we've seen so far, but one question we've been asked fairly frequently since the automaker's announcement is whether the 2018 CX-5's engine will carry over unchanged from 2017. The 2018 Mazda CX-5 will be available in three trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Noticeably missing is the Signature trim, which was included in the CX-5's lineup for the 2017 model year. All three trims will come equipped with a high-power 2.5-liter SKYACTIV ® -G engine that delivers 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. The engine is slightly different than the 2017 model's standard engine, however. For 2018, Mazda engineers added a new cylinder-deactivation technology to the engine, which is designed to improve the crossover's fuel economy rating. The technology is a Mazda-exclusive, so crossover shoppers won't find this impressive feature on any of the 2018 CX-5's competitors. The engine will come paired with the responsive SKYACTIV ® -DRIVE 6-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode and Sport mode, and front-wheel drive comes standard as well. All trims also come available with Mazda's i-ACTIV AWD ®, which uses 27 sensors to predict road conditions before the driver experiences any slipping or sliding. Mazda's SKYACTIV ® -X engine will feature a brand-new combustion method, which has never been seen on any engine that's been made before. The engine benefits from a compression ignition, combining the advantages of both gasoline engines and diesel engines. The SKYACTIV ® -X engine combines the quick response of diesel engines with the clean exhaust emissions offered by gasoline engines to create a crossover engine that truly gives drivers the best of both worlds. Mazda's SKYACTIV ® -X engine vs regular gasoline and diesel engines So what are the key differences between the SKYACTIV ® -X engine and traditional gasoline and diesel engines? For starters, output performance and responsiveness are greatly increased, delivering about 10 percent more torque than the current Mazda SKYACTIV ® -G gasoline engines, and it is significantly more responsive than diesel engines. Additionally, the SKYACTIV ® -X engine is more fuel-efficient than current engines, delivering a 20 percent increase in fuel economy rating from the SKYACTIV ® -G engines. 2017 Mazda CX-5 New Diesel Engine Release Date For the first time ever in the United States, a diesel engine will be featured in a Mazda model. Beginning in the second half of 2017, Mazda will offer a diesel engine in the all-new 2017 Mazda CX-5. This means the 2017 Mazda CX-5 will now be more fuel efficient than ever before while also performing and handling better than previous models. more 2017 Mazda CX-5 Diesel Engine Specs and Features The 2017 Mazda CX-5 diesel engine will be the SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine. Horsepower and torque numbers are not yet available, though Mazda has said the 2017 CX-5’s diesel engine will offer a torque-rich driving experience. Mazda has also said the 2017 CX-5’s new diesel engine will rev freely to high RPMs. The 2017 Mazda CX-5’s new diesel engine will also make it one of the most fuel efficient vehicles in its class. 2017 Mazda CX-5 New Powertrain and Comfort Features The wait for the all-new 2017 Mazda CX-5 has been a long one, and it looks like it’s going to be a little longer still. But after getting a glimpse at the completely redesigned interior and exterior, the powertrain options and all of the other advanced new safety and technology features found within the new 2017 CX-5, it appears our patience is going to pay off in a big way. That’s because the all-new CX-5 is going to be as fun to drive as it is comfortable to ride in, as powerful as it is safe, and as impressive of a sight inside as it is outside.  To wet our whistle as we wait for the 2017 Mazda CX-5 to arrive on our Seacoast Mazda lot, let’s take a closer look at its new features and check in on its release date. more 2017 Mazda CX-5 Exterior and Interior Redesign Features The 2017 Mazda CX-5 has been redesigned from the inside out for a bold and tough yet sleek and sporty exterior and a comfortable and spacious interior. In terms of new exterior features, the 2017 CX-5 has a lower center of gravity and a wider front and rear tread when compared to previous models to give the new CX-5 a more powerful stance and improved handling. The new CX-5 also has thinner, lower-placed headlamps for improved visibility. The interior has been completely redone, with Mazda aiming for what they’re calling a human-centered ambience. That goal is being accomplished by improving seat quality and comfort, repositioning features like the floor console and shift knob for improved access, increasing the passenger space and cargo capacity and much, much more. 2017 Mazda CX-5 New Powertrain Features The 2017 Mazda CX-5 will come with the choice between three engines depending on market – a SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel engine or the SKYACTIV-G 2.0 or 2.5 direct-injection gasoline engines. These engines will be paired with either a six-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission or a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission. Mazda’s predictive i-ACTIV all-wheel drive system will also be available. 2017 Mazda CX-5 U.S. Release Date The 2017 Mazda CX-5 will first launch in Japan in February before being rolled out to global markets not long after.
