The Mazda CX-5 is a sleek, compact SUV that is perfect for those who want a little more passenger and cargo space than a sedan offers, but who don’t want to drive an unwieldy large SUV or truck – which will also have a much higher fuel bill. The CX-5 has a gorgeous exterior that turns heads, a comfortable interior to give every passenger a nice ride, and plenty of advanced tech and infotainment features to make any drive more fun.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 also has two engine options to give buyers more flexibility to create the driving experience they want. Here’s a closer look at what these two options have to offer to help you when making your choice:

Base Model Engine

The base model 2023 Mazda CX-5 comes with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that puts out 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard.

Handling on this powertrain is smooth and efficient, with quick gear changes and fast acceleration. You’ll find that you have more than enough power to get you through your daily commute with enjoyment and ease. While you won’t be able to conquer all the off-road terrain you want with this powertrain, you will certainly be able to handle rockier rides and steep climbs with the all-wheel drive on your side.

The base model engine gets an estimated 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, or 26 mpg combined.

Turbocharged Engine

If you choose the Mazda CX-5 Turbo or Turbo Signature, you will get the upgraded engine – 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. If you fill up with premium fuel, you’ll get a little extra power – 256 horsepower. You get the same, smooth-changing six-speed automatic transmission, as well as standard all-wheel drive.

The turbocharged engine will let you accelerate faster and give you more power on uncertain terrain. You’ll enjoy more capabilities on the ride, and you’ll have more fun.

The additional power does require more fuel, so the efficiency numbers drop a bit. The estimated fuel efficiency is 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, or 24 mpg combined. The difference from the base engine won’t be enough for most drivers to notice more frequent trips to the pump.
