The other engine option is also expected to be a new turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, which would also be backed by a hybrid engine. 

The engines are expected to be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive will be standard. All reports indicate that the new CX-90 will offer a smooth ride, with exceptional fuel efficiency.

Exterior and Interior Styling

Photos of the new CX-90 have all been covered in camouflage wrap up to this point. However, we still get a pretty good idea of what kind of styling to expect in the new SUV. The CX-90 has the distinctive Mazda profile with swooping lines, an aerodynamic design, and thoughtful details like a rear spoiler or uniquely shaped rear windows. 

We haven’t seen any photos of the interior yet, but we know that Mazda is planning to upgrade the profile on this new SUV, so we’re expecting a lot of high-quality materials and conscientious design choices throughout the cabin. We also expect all three rows to offer plenty of leg room and for the seating to be ergonomic for maximum comfort. 

Safety Features

Mazda outfits its vehicles with many of the best safety features on the market, including forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and more. With the upward trajectory that the CX-90 is set to take, we expect to see a full suite of these features, plus a few extras. The Mazda CX-50 is a brand new vehicle, but it is already making a huge impact in the market with its flashy style, spirited performance, and range of superior technology options. Now, the small SUV is racking up even more praise, earning the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ designation. 

In order to win this top honor, a vehicle must earn “Good” or better ratings in at least six of the institute’s crash-readiness evaluations. The vehicle must also have a front crash prevention system that earns a score of “advanced” or “superior” on tests for vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian crashes. 

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 earned the following scores:

Only turbo models of the new Mazda CX-50 are offered with curve adaptive headlights, which accounts for the difference in the safety test ratings. Non-turbo trim levels come with static LED headlights. 

Not all safety tests conducted by the IIHS factored into its selection of its Top Safety Picks, though these tests are instructive for buyers, who want to better understand the comprehensive safety performance of vehicles. 

The IIHS performs these safety tests each year, providing extensive testing results across the industry. The IIHS is an independent safety-testing organization that is not affiliated with the government. It is funded by the insurance industry. 

Several other Mazda vehicles were named Top Safety Pick+ recipients this year, including the Mazda 3 (sedan and hatchback), CX-30, CX-5, and CX-9.

Safety Features

Mazda adds several safety features to the CX-50 that provide even more protection on the road. Some of the standard features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assistance, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and pedestrian detection.

Mazda has always been at the forefront of automotive innovation. In recent years, it has put out some gorgeous vehicles that deliver exceptional performance and come with advanced technology that make driving fun. Recently, Mazda announced that it will introduce two new exciting vehicles that build on that legacy: The all-new Mazda CX-70 and the Mazda CX-90. 

These two crossovers will be built on a new platform that Mazda is introducing, and they’ll be released sometime after another new model, the CX-50, is released in November. Industry experts estimate that the CX-70 will arrive at the end of this year and the CX-90 will arrive early in 2023. Here’s what we know so far: 

Longitudinal Platform

The longitudinal platform was developed as part of Mazda’s stated plans to make a quarter of its vehicles be electric by 2030 and to have all of its vehicles have at least some degree of electrification. This new platform is a straight-six with rear-wheel drive. It has a double wishbone front suspension for improved handling. The engine is expected to have a plug-in hybrid system to save on fuel consumption, as well as a turbocharger to amplify performance. 

Not very many details have been released about the platform other than a diagram, but we expect big changes based on the goals that Mazda has set. We expect that more details will come out throughout the summer, and we’ll be reporting as we get them. 

Additional Details

Details are scarce about these two new vehicles, as they often are in the first days after an early announcement. However, we do know a few items of interest. The Mazda CX-70 will be a two-row vehicle, while the Mazda CX-90, which will replace the current CX-9, will be a three-row vehicle. Mazda also says it will optimize the configuration of the CX-90 so that it offers more interior and cargo space. Both models were designed for audiences looking for larger SUVs. 

Mazda has its sights set on competitors like BMW, Honda, and Lexus, with the goal of pulling out of comparisons to more budget-friendly models like Nissan or Toyota, so we expect to see a lot of high-end materials and features in both new models. Mazda has already been designing its vehicles with more sophisticated choices, so this will be a natural evolution for the automaker. Anytime you turbocharge an engine you can expect the performance specs to jump, and that’s certainly the case with the Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo. While the stock engine pushes out 186-horsepower and 186 ft-lb of torque, the turbocharged engine puts those numbers to shame.

The 2.5 turbo pushes out 250-horsepower and an impressive 310 ft-lb of torque, which leads to a faster and more responsive engine that is simply more fun to drive. It takes the 0 to 60 time from 8.1 seconds to 5.8.

While the standard 2.5 isn’t the quickest compact crossover on the market, when you get the turbocharged engine it’s easily one of the fastest.

On steep hills, the idle raises automatically and allows a smoother transition to torque application. The SUV’s ABS system is engaged and holds the brakes so the vehicle won’t roll back. The engine’s naturally strong torque kicks in right off idle and the transmission locks the torque converter. In this launch position, the torque converter provides smoother power delivery so the vehicle can traverse large obstacles easily. 

5. Unique Features 

Two features make the Mazda CX-50 unique. Its i-Active all-wheel drive system that can predict situations when wheelspin will occur then immediately sends power where it’s needed. The Carbon Edition 

This trim has the Preferred’s features and is available as a hatchback or sedan, but only with front-wheel drive. It has a heads-up display, 12-speaker Bose audio system and red leather upholstery. 

The Preferred Trim

This trim has the Carbon Edition’s features and adds power-sliding glass moonroof, navigation, satellite radio, heated front seats, adds 2-position memory to the 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, is available as a hatchback or sedan and can get all-wheel drive and add a 6-speed manual transmission, but only on the hatchback models. 

The Premium Trim

This trim has the Preferred trim’s standard features and adds Signature adaptive LED headlights, combination LED tail lights, 12-speaker Bose audio system, satellite radio, head-up display, red or black leather upholstery in the hatchback and white in the sedan and traffic-sign recognition. The hatchback can get a 6-speed manual transmission on front-wheel drive models. Automatic-equipped models get steering-wheel paddle shifters.

The Turbo Trim

The Premium Plus Trim

This trim has the Turbo’s features and adds perforated leather upholstery, 360-degree camera system, aerodynamic trim pieces, parking sensors in the front and rear and Traffic Jam Assist. The sedan has a gloss-black rear-deck spoiler. The hatchback has a gloss-black roof-spoiler and aggressive-looking front spoiler. It adds cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking and a 360-degree camera.
